Exchanging an Australian driving licence in Spain

Australia is not on Spain's exchange list. Australian residents must pass the DGT theory exam (officially available in English since 2024) and the practical driving exam. This page walks you through what to expect.

No exchange available. There is no Australia-Spain bilateral driving-licence agreement. This applies to all Australian state and territory licences. Cannot be negotiated locally - the rule is set at the treaty level.

The realistic picture

6

months from TIE issuance to have a Spanish licence - your Australian one is not valid after that.

€600-1,500

total cost, dominated by autoescuela lessons needed to get used to LHS driving and Spanish exam conventions.

2-4

months from start to licence in hand. Theory first (2-6 weeks study), then practical.

What Australians find hardest

Driving on the right side

Spain drives on the right, with left-hand-drive cars. Roundabouts spin the other way (counter-clockwise from your perspective). Most Australians need 5-15 hours behind the wheel before this feels natural.

"Stop and look" intersections

Spanish examiners want a visible head movement to check mirrors and blind spots before every manoeuvre. Failing to demonstrate this is a common reason experienced Aussies fail the practical.

Manual transmission

Most autoescuelas use manual cars. If you only ever drove automatic in Australia, factor in extra lessons - or accept that your Spanish licence will be automatic-only (a restriction code on the card).

Strict priority rules

Spain enforces priority by signs and markings, not by yielding-by-default. Roundabouts in particular have specific rules about which lane to enter and exit in - get this wrong on the exam and it is an instant fail.

Start with the theory exam

Theory before practical. Our practice tests use the full official DGT question bank in English, in the same format as the real exam.

Frequently asked questions

Can I exchange my Australian driver licence in Spain?

No. Australia is not on Spain's bilateral exchange list. Australian residents - regardless of which state issued the licence (NSW, VIC, QLD, etc.) - must pass the full DGT theory exam and practical driving exam to obtain a Spanish licence.

How long can I drive on my Australian licence after moving?

Six months from the date you register as a Spanish resident (TIE issuance). After six months, you must have a Spanish licence or stop driving. An International Driving Permit issued in Australia does not extend this window for residents.

I have been driving for 25 years. Will I find the exams easy?

The theory exam is mostly about Spanish road signs, priority rules, alcohol limits and specific Spanish driving laws - none of which an experienced Australian driver intuitively knows. Plan for 2-6 weeks of study. The practical exam is harder for experienced drivers than they expect: examiners scrutinise hand position, mirror-checking habits, and roundabout protocol, and many years of driving means many ingrained habits to unlearn.

Driving on the right - is that a big issue?

It is the single biggest change for Australians (and other right-hand-drive countries). The car is also left-hand-drive. Most autoescuelas will not present you to the practical exam until you are comfortable with this - typically 5-15 hours of lessons. Roundabouts feel completely different because the priority direction is reversed.

How much does the process cost?

€600-€1,500 total. The bulk goes to autoescuela practical lessons (€600-€1,200 for 10-30 lessons). DGT theory exam €92, practical exam €92, psicotécnico €30-€50.

Is the theory exam available in English?

Yes - officially since 2024. The questions are the same as Spanish, just translated. 30 questions, 27 required to pass. Multiple-choice, computerised, 30-minute time limit.

Are there reciprocity benefits between Australian states and Spanish regions?

No. Spain's exchange agreements are negotiated at the national level. There is no state-by-region reciprocity. A NSW driver and a Tasmanian driver are treated identically: no exchange, must test.

Can I drive in other EU countries on my Australian licence + IDP while waiting?

Yes for tourism, no for resident driving. Each EU country has its own residency clock. Once you are a Spanish resident, you should not be driving long-term in any EU country on your Australian licence - you should be exchanging or testing locally.
