Frequently asked questions

Everything we get asked about the DGT theory exam in English, exchanging a foreign licence, prices, study time and how DGTTestPro itself works. Updated for 2026.

About the DGT theory exam

How many questions are on the DGT theory exam and what is the pass mark? +

The Category B (car) DGT theory exam has 30 multiple-choice questions with three answer options each. You need to answer 27 out of 30 correctly to pass - that is one of the strictest pass marks of any European driving theory exam. Other licence categories vary: AM (moped) is 20 questions, CAP (professional certificate) is 100 questions.

How long is the DGT theory exam? +

You have 30 minutes to complete the 30 questions for Category B. The CAP exam allows 150 minutes for its 100 questions. The clock starts the moment your computer terminal loads the first question.

Can I take the DGT theory exam in English? +

Yes - for Category B (car) only. Since 2024 the DGT has offered an official English translation of the Category B theory exam at all major Jefaturas Provinciales de Tráfico. You select English when scheduling your cita previa. The questions are the same as the Spanish version, just translated.

Which driving licence categories can be taken in English at the DGT? +

Only Category B (car) is currently available in English at the DGT. Categories A1, A2, A (motorcycle), C (truck), D (bus), CAP and B+E (trailer) are Spanish-only. This is a common point of confusion - if you are testing for a motorcycle or commercial licence, you will need enough Spanish to follow the exam.

Is the DGT theory exam available online, or must I go in person? +

In person, always. The exam is taken on a computer at an authorised DGT centre or at certain partner driving schools. There is no at-home or remote option. Your identity is checked on arrival against your TIE or passport.

How do I book an appointment at the DGT office for my theory test (cita previa)? +

Go to sedeclave.dgt.gob.es, identify yourself with Cl@ve, DNI digital certificate, or your TIE number plus support code, then choose "Trámites de conductores" - "Examen teórico". Pick your Jefatura, choose a date and time slot, and confirm. Major cities (Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga) can have 2-6 week waits; smaller offices are often available within days.

How can I check my theory exam result? +

Immediately on screen at the end of the exam, then formally by SMS or email within 24 hours, and online in your DGT user portal at sede.dgt.gob.es. If you took the exam through a driving school, the school is also notified and can confirm. Keep the result screen printout if you can - some psicotécnico centres ask for it.

What happens if I fail the DGT theory exam? +

You can retake it after a minimum 7-day cooling-off period (10 days in some regions). The fee is €94.05 each attempt. There is no limit on the total number of attempts, but each one requires a new cita previa and a fresh fee. Most failures happen on roundabout priority, road-sign recognition, or alcohol-limit questions.

What documents do I need to bring on exam day? +

Bring your TIE or passport (whichever you used for the cita previa), the printed cita previa confirmation, your psychophysical certificate (psicotécnico) - usually transmitted digitally by the centre that issued it, and the receipt of your €94.05 Tasa 2.1 payment. If you booked through a driving school, they will tell you exactly what they need on top.

What is the cost of the DGT theory exam in 2026? +

The DGT fee (Tasa 2.1) is €94.05 per attempt in 2026. On top of that you need a psicotécnico certificate (€30-€50) and either self-study materials or driving-school enrolment. If you fail and retake, the €94.05 fee is due again each time.

Are the DGT exam questions updated? How often does the question bank change? +

The DGT refreshes its question bank periodically - the last major update was in 2024 when English was added. Smaller updates happen each year to reflect new regulations (low-emission zones, e-scooter rules, alcohol limits). Our practice bank is reviewed against the latest official syllabus regularly.

Is it mandatory to attend driving school classes, or can I study independently? +

You can study and present yourself for the theory exam "por libre" - on your own, without enrolling in a driving school. Many expats do this. However, for the practical exam you effectively need a school, because the exam car must have dual controls and only schools provide them. Plan to study theory independently and use a school for the practical.

Eligibility and nationalities

Can EU citizens from countries other than Spain take the DGT theory exam? +

Yes. Any EU/EEA citizen who is legally resident in Spain can present for the DGT theory and practical exams. In most cases EU citizens prefer to exchange their existing licence (no test needed), but if your licence is lost, expired or you want to add a category, you take the exams like anyone else.

Can non-EU citizens apply for a Spanish driving licence? +

Yes, once you have legal residency (TIE issued). The path depends on whether your country has a bilateral exchange agreement with Spain. If yes (UK, Argentina, Japan, etc.), you can usually exchange without testing. If no (US, Australia, Canada, India), you take the full DGT theory and practical exams.

Is my UK driving licence valid in Spain? +

Yes for short-term visits (up to 6 months as a resident, or as a tourist for the duration of your stay). For residents beyond 6 months, the UK-Spain bilateral exchange agreement (in force since 16 March 2023) lets you swap a DVLA or DVA photocard licence for a Spanish one with no test required. See our dedicated UK guide for the full process.

Is my US driving licence valid to drive in Spain? +

Valid for the first 6 months of Spanish residency. After that, you must hold a Spanish licence. There is no US-Spain exchange agreement, so American residents must pass the DGT theory and practical exams. The theory is available in English. See our dedicated US guide for costs and timeline.

Can I drive in Spain with an Australian or Canadian driving licence? +

Yes for the first 6 months of residency, with an International Driving Permit recommended. Neither Australia nor Canada has a licence-exchange agreement with Spain, so residents must take the full DGT exams. We have dedicated guides for Australian and Canadian licence holders.

Which countries have a driving licence exchange agreement with Spain? +

All EU/EEA states, plus the UK, Switzerland, Andorra, Serbia, Ukraine, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Japan, New Zealand, and most Latin American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay). The full bilateral list is on the exchange-licence page.

Do I need a NIE/TIE to apply for a Spanish driving licence? +

Yes. The DGT will not process an exchange or register you for an exam without proof of legal residency. EU citizens use their green-paper certificate of registration; non-EU citizens use the TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero). A NIE number alone (without registered residency) is not enough.

Can I take the DGT exam if I am still waiting for my NIE? +

Not for an exchange or for a full Spanish licence, no. The DGT requires legal-residency proof at the time of the exam. You can however still study with our practice tests so that when your TIE arrives you are ready to schedule a cita previa immediately.

Licence exchange

How do I exchange a foreign driving licence in Spain? +

Confirm your country qualifies (see our exchange-licence guide), get a psicotécnico medical certificate, pay the DGT fee (Tasa 2.3, €28.87 in 2026), book a cita previa at sedeclave.dgt.gob.es choosing "Canje de permiso", attend with all documents, and surrender your foreign licence. You leave with a temporary paper permit; the physical Spanish card arrives by post in 4-8 weeks.

How long does the licence exchange process take in Spain? +

Around 6-10 weeks end-to-end in most cases. The cita previa wait is the longest variable - 2-6 weeks in Madrid/Barcelona, often days in smaller cities. The appointment itself takes 30-60 minutes. The physical card is then posted to you within 4-8 weeks.

Do I need to retake the theory exam if my country has an exchange agreement with Spain? +

No. The whole point of a bilateral exchange agreement is that Spain accepts your foreign licence as equivalent without re-testing. You hand over your original, do the paperwork, and receive a Spanish licence. No theory or practical exam required.

What happens to my original foreign licence when I exchange it? +

The DGT keeps it at your appointment and returns it through diplomatic channels to the issuing authority (DVLA for UK, etc.). You leave the appointment without your original licence but with a temporary paper Spanish permit. Always take a colour photocopy before the appointment for your records.

Can I exchange my licence if it has expired? +

No. Only currently valid licences in active validity can be exchanged. If yours has expired, you must either renew it in the issuing country first (then exchange), or skip the exchange and take the full DGT theory and practical exams in Spain. Provisional or learner permits also cannot be exchanged.

About DGTTestPro (the platform)

Is DGTTestPro free to use? +

Yes - the free tier gives you one full practice test per day plus a 10-question sample test that needs no signup. You can also read our summarised online theory book. Premium unlocks unlimited practice tests, full 30-question exam simulations, weak-topic review, and per-chapter statistics.

What is the difference between the free plan and Premium? +

Free: 1 practice test per day, the 10-question sample, basic statistics, summarised theory book. Premium: unlimited practice tests, latest DGT exams updated for 2026, tests by licence category and theory chapter, the full 30-question exam simulation, per-topic weak-question review, full online theory book, bookmarks and personal notes, and priority email support.

How much does Premium cost and what does it include? +

Premium is a one-off €34.90 payment for 180 days of access. It includes everything in the free tier plus unlimited practice tests, full exam simulation, all licence categories, the complete theory book, weak-topic drills, bookmarks, and 24-hour-response email support.

Does Premium auto-renew? Will I be charged again after 180 days? +

No. Premium is a one-time payment, not a subscription. After 180 days you simply revert to the free tier - no surprise charge, no card on file billed automatically. If you want another 180 days, you choose to renew manually.

Can I get a refund if I am not satisfied? +

Yes, within 14 days of purchase, provided you have used fewer than 5 practice tests. Refunds are not given based on exam failure - the platform is a study aid, not a guarantee. Email support and we process refunds within 5 working days.

Are the questions on DGTTestPro the same ones that appear on the real DGT exam? +

They are written to match the official DGT format and curriculum - same 3-option multiple choice, same 27/30 pass mark, same topic distribution. They are not the exact verbatim questions from the live DGT bank (the DGT does not publish the active question pool). Practising on ours builds the same reasoning patterns the real exam tests.

How are the questions updated when DGT changes the question bank? +

We review our bank against the official DGT syllabus quarterly and after every notified change to the curriculum (typically once or twice a year). New questions are added, outdated ones (e.g. obsolete regulations) are flagged or rewritten. Premium subscribers always see the latest set.

Does DGTTestPro work on mobile? +

Yes - the entire site is mobile-optimised and works in any browser on iOS or Android. There is no separate app to download. Practice tests, the theory book and your progress all sync across devices.

Can I switch between Spanish and English while studying? +

Yes. Use the ES/EN switcher in the header (or in the mobile menu) at any time. Question text, answer options, explanations and the entire site UI switch language instantly. Your progress and bookmarks stay the same across both languages.

How does the progress tracking and readiness score work? +

Every answered question feeds your per-chapter statistics. The readiness score weights recent performance higher than older results and flags chapters where you score below the DGT pass threshold. When all chapters are green and your overall score is above 90% over your last few full tests, you are statistically ready to sit the real exam.

Can I bookmark questions to review later? +

Yes, Premium users can bookmark any question with one click and review the full bookmark list at any time. Useful for tricky topics you want to revisit before the exam, or for questions where the official answer surprised you.

Is DGTTestPro affiliated with or approved by the DGT? +

No. DGTTestPro is not the Dirección General de Tráfico, not a driving school, and is not affiliated with either. We are an independent study aid that maintains a bilingual practice-question bank aligned with the published DGT syllabus. Official communications, fees and exam booking always happen through sede.dgt.gob.es.

Studying and preparation

How long does it take to prepare for the DGT theory exam? +

Typical preparation is 2-6 weeks of study at 30-60 minutes per day. People with prior driving experience tend to be ready faster (1-3 weeks); first-time drivers or learners with little Spanish-driving exposure usually need 4-8 weeks. The readiness score on your dashboard tells you objectively when your practice scores are above the pass threshold.

What is the best way to study for the DGT theory test in English? +

Mix the two formats: read each chapter of the summarised theory book once, then drill that chapter with 20-50 practice questions. Re-read the chapter for any topics where you scored below 90%. Once all chapters are green, do 5-10 full 30-question exam simulations under timed conditions. The variety prevents memorisation and builds exam stamina.

How many practice tests should I do before taking the real exam? +

Most successful candidates do at least 30-50 full 30-question practice tests, plus chapter-targeted drills on weak topics. The exact number is less important than consistently scoring 28/30 or higher across your last 10 tests. If you keep scoring 25-26 you are close but not safe - more chapter drills are needed.

What are the most common topics people fail on in the DGT theory exam? +

Consistently: roundabout priority and lane choice, road-sign recognition (especially the many regulatory and warning signs that look similar), alcohol and drug limits with their per-category variations, speed limits in residential zones, and overtaking rules on secondary roads. We add extra drill questions in these areas because they cause the most failures.

Should I study the full theory manual or just do practice questions? +

Both - studying only practice questions risks memorising answer patterns without understanding the reasoning, and the exam includes questions you have not seen verbatim. The summarised theory book on our site is designed to be readable in a single sitting per chapter and immediately followed by practice on that chapter.

What is the readiness score and when does it mean I am ready to take the exam? +

The readiness score is a weighted percentage based on your recent answers across every chapter. We display green/amber/red per chapter. Most users who pass on the first attempt have all chapters green and an overall readiness score of 90% or higher across their last 10 full practice tests.

Licence categories

What is the difference between Category B and Category A2? +

Category B is the standard car licence - permits cars up to 3,500 kg and 9 seats. Category A2 is for motorcycles between 35 kW and 47 kW, available from age 18 (with restrictions for the first 2 years). The B theory exam is available in English; A2 is Spanish-only at present.

What is the CAP (Certificate of Professional Competence) exam? +

CAP (Certificado de Aptitud Profesional) is the qualification required to drive trucks (C/C1) or buses (D/D1) professionally - i.e. for hire or reward. The CAP must be renewed every 5 years via refresher training. It is separate from your driving licence.

How many questions are in the CAP exam and what is the pass mark? +

100 questions in 150 minutes. You need 80 correct answers to pass (80%). The exam is in Spanish only and covers regulations, vehicle safety, mechanics, professional conduct, and tachograph rules. Very different in scope from the standard 30-question theory test.

What is the Category AM (moped) exam format? +

AM (mopeds up to 50 cc, up to 45 km/h) uses a 20-question theory test in Spanish. You need 17 out of 20 to pass. Available from age 15. Often the entry-point licence for younger riders before progressing to A1 or A2.

Can I study for multiple licence categories at the same time on DGTTestPro? +

Yes. Premium gives you access to the practice bank for all categories: B, A2, AM, C, D, CAP and B+E. Many users study B first (since it is in English), then add a motorcycle or trailer category later. Your progress is tracked separately per category.

After passing the theory exam

How long is the DGT theory exam certificate valid before I must take the practical? +

Two years. You have 24 months from your theory pass to also pass the practical exam, otherwise you must retake the theory. Most people complete the practical within 2-3 months of passing theory, so the 2-year window is a comfortable safety margin.

What happens after I pass the theory test? What are the next steps? +

Enrol with a driving school for practical lessons (the school provides the dual-control car required for the practical exam), complete typically 8-20 hours of behind-the-wheel lessons, then your school books you for the practical exam. Pass that and you get a paper provisional permit on the day; the physical Spanish licence card arrives by post 4-8 weeks later.

How many practical driving lessons do I need before taking the road test? +

Heavily personal. People with prior driving experience: typically 8-15 hours. People with no prior driving: 25-40 hours. The school decides when you are ready - they have a strong incentive to present only candidates who will pass, since their reputation depends on it.

Can I take the practical driving exam in English? +

No - the practical exam is always conducted in Spanish. The examiner gives directions in Spanish ("turn right", "park here", "prepare to overtake"). You only need a small set of driving-relevant phrases, which any decent autoescuela will drill with you before the exam.

How do I find an English-speaking driving school (autoescuela) in Spain? +

Major expat hubs (Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Marbella, Valencia, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca) have several English-speaking schools - search "English autoescuela [city]" or check expat-community Facebook groups for recommendations. In smaller cities you may need to ask several schools; some have one English-speaking instructor among an otherwise Spanish-language team.
