About the Category B (Car) exam
The Permiso B (Class B) is Spain's standard car driving licence, covering vehicles up to 3,500 kg and up to 8 passenger seats. It is the most common category and the one most learners in Spain - including English-speaking expats - need to obtain.
The DGT theory exam consists of 30 multiple-choice questions with three options each, in 30 minutes. You need at least 27 correct answers to pass. Topics span traffic signs, right-of-way rules, basic mechanics, first aid, and eco-driving.
The most effective preparation strategy is to work through the official DGT question bank repeatedly until you consistently score above 95 %. Permiso B is also the only category whose theory exam the DGT offers in English. You can sit it from age 18, you are allowed up to three mistakes, and the DGT exam fee (€94.05 in 2026) covers two attempts. Since February 2026 the exam adds risk-perception video clips to the 30 questions, so practise reading traffic scenes rather than memorising answers.

Learn the question bank
The DGT draws exam questions from a published bank. Practicing every question category is more effective than cramming theory alone.

Drill your weak topics
After each practice session, review the questions you got wrong. Targeted repetition on weak areas is the fastest way to close gaps.

Simulate the real exam
Run timed full-length simulations once you are consistently passing practice sets. The time pressure of the real exam is a skill of its own.

Target 95 %+ before booking
Candidates who consistently score 95 % or higher on practice tests have the best first-attempt pass rates. Book the exam when you are consistently above that threshold.
