Exchanging a Canadian driving licence in Spain
Canada has no driving-licence exchange agreement with Spain. Canadian residents - from all provinces - must pass the DGT theory and practical exams. The theory exam has been officially available in English since 2024.
No exchange available. Treaty-level decision; no Jefatura Provincial can override it. All Canadian provinces and territories treated identically.
What to expect
months from TIE issuance to either have a Spanish licence or stop driving.
typical cost. Practical lessons via an autoescuela dominate the budget.
months realistic timeline. Theory first (2-6 weeks of study), then practical.
Province-by-province notes
Spain treats all provincial licences identically (no exchange), but the Canadian-side paperwork and the cultural transition vary slightly:
Ontario, Alberta, BC, Manitoba
Standard Class 5 / G full passenger licences. No special pre-departure paperwork needed - just bring your physical licence and apply for an IDP through CAA or BCAA before leaving for Spain (useful for the first six months only).
Quebec
SAAQ-issued Class 5 licence. The licence card is bilingual French/English which the DGT accepts. Note: Quebec's separate language regime does not create any special exchange status with Spain.
Provisional/Graduated licences (G2, N, novice)
Even if you have a graduated/probationary licence in Canada, you still must take the full DGT exams. No reciprocity for partial-status licences.
Driving differences Canadians notice
- Roundabouts everywhere. Most Spanish intersections are roundabouts, not four-way-stops. Lane choice on entry matters - get it wrong and it is an automatic fail on the practical.
- No right-on-red. Unlike most Canadian provinces, you cannot turn right at a red light in Spain. Wait for green.
- Priority by sign, not by default. You do not "yield to the right" by default. Priority is determined by triangular yield signs, stop signs, or markings. Drivers without a yield sign assume priority.
- Manual gearbox is the default. Most autoescuela cars are manual. Taking the exam in an automatic restricts your Spanish licence to automatic-only vehicles.
- Speed limits in km/h and strict. 120 km/h on motorways, 100 on dual-carriageways, 90 on secondary roads, 50 in urban areas (often 30 in residential zones). Radar enforcement is heavy.
- Lower alcohol limit. 0.5 g/L blood alcohol (0.3 g/L for drivers in their first two years). Severe consequences for any violation.

Frequently asked questions
Can I exchange my Canadian driver licence in Spain?
No. There is no Canada-Spain bilateral driving-licence exchange agreement. This applies to licences from all provinces and territories - Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, etc. Canadian residents must pass the DGT theory exam and the practical driving exam.
How long can I drive in Spain on a Canadian licence?
Six months from your TIE issuance date (or empadronamiento date if you are an EU/EEA family member). After six months, your Canadian licence is no longer valid for driving in Spain - you need a Spanish one.
Does it matter which province issued my licence?
For Spain, no. The Canadian federal government has not negotiated an exchange agreement with Spain, and provinces cannot negotiate one individually. A Quebec G licence and an Alberta Class 5 are treated identically by the DGT: no exchange, must test.
I have a Quebec licence - can I get help in French at the DGT?
Generally no. DGT proceedings are conducted in Spanish (with English available since 2024 for the theory exam). Some Jefaturas in Catalonia may have Catalan signage, but French is not an official language at any DGT office. Your TIE process and exam will both be in Spanish or English.
How much will the whole process cost?
€600-€1,500 total. Autoescuela practical lessons are the bulk (€600-€1,200 for 10-30 lessons). DGT theory exam €92, practical exam €92, psicotécnico €30-€50. No exchange fee since there is no exchange.
I have winter-driving experience from Canada. Does that count?
Not formally - examiners do not give credit for prior driving experience of any kind. Informally, defensive driving habits from Canadian winters are useful, but examiners want to see Spanish-specific habits: mirror-checking, hand-position, roundabout protocol, observance of priority signs over yielding-by-default.
Is the DGT theory exam available in English?
Yes - officially since 2024. 30 questions, 27 to pass, 30 minutes. Same questions as the Spanish version, just translated. Our practice tests use the official bank in English.
Can I drive in Portugal, France or elsewhere while waiting?
For short visits as a tourist, your Canadian licence + IDP is fine. Once you are a Spanish resident long-term driving in another EU country on your Canadian licence puts you in a grey zone - and you may not be covered by insurance after the six-month window. Get a Spanish licence first.
