Driving in Spain with a Colombian licence

There is no Colombia-Spain driving-licence exchange agreement. Colombian residents must pass the DGT theory exam (available in Spanish and English) and the practical driving exam. This guide covers the realistic timeline, cost and step-by-step process for 2026.

No exchange available. Colombia is not on Spain's bilateral exchange list. Colombian residents must pass the full DGT theory exam and the practical driving exam to obtain a Spanish licence.

What this actually means

6

months from residency registration to have a Spanish licence. After that, your Colombian licence is not valid for driving in Spain.

€700-1,500

typical all-in cost - dominated by autoescuela practical lessons. Theory study can be done with our materials for a fraction of that.

2-4

months realistic timeline from starting the process to holding a Spanish licence. Theory exam first, practical after.

The full process - 7 steps

  1. 1

    Register your residency (TIE)

Apply for your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) at the immigration office (Extranjeria). This is the date that starts your six-month driving clock. Do not delay - the clock runs from TIE issuance, not from when you actually start the driving process.

  2. 2

    Start theory study early

The DGT theory bank has around 1,500 questions in active rotation. Spanish speakers typically need 2-4 weeks of focused study. Sit practice tests in the 30-question, 27-to-pass format so the timing feels familiar. Key areas that differ from Colombian road law: priority rules at unmarked intersections, demerit-points system, low-emission zone regulations.

  3. 3

    Get a psicotécnico

Walk into any "centro de reconocimiento de conductores" - no appointment usually needed. Vision test, reaction-time test, brief medical check. Takes 20-30 minutes, costs €30-50. The certificate is sent digitally to DGT. Required before you can be presented for the theory exam.

  4. 4

Book and take the theory exam

Through your autoescuela (easiest) or independently via sede.dgt.gob.es. Choose Spanish or English when scheduling. 30 questions, 27 correct to pass. Multiple-choice, computerised. You receive your result immediately.

  5. 5

    Practical lessons at an autoescuela

You need a dual-control car for the practical exam, which only schools provide. Plan for 5-20 lessons at €40-55 each. Schools also handle exam booking and accompany you to the examiner. Inform your instructor you are Colombian - they can focus lessons on the Spanish-specific habits examiners check for.

  6. 6

    Practical exam

About 25 minutes of city and secondary-road driving with a DGT examiner. Instructions are given in Spanish. Approximately 50-60% of candidates pass on the first attempt. If you fail, you can retake after a minimum wait (usually set by the autoescuela).

  7. 7

    Provisional permit + physical card

Receive a temporary paper permit at the exam centre immediately after passing. This is fully valid in Spain. The plastic Spanish licence card arrives by post approximately 4-8 weeks later.

Colombia-specific things to know

Speaking Spanish helps, but the exam tests Spanish road law

Knowing Spanish removes the language barrier but does not mean passing without study. Spain's low-emission zone rules, demerit-points system, alcohol limits (0.5 g/l general, 0.3 g/l for new drivers), and right-of-way logic at unmarked intersections differ meaningfully from Colombian traffic regulations. Budget proper study time.

Colombian driving habits differ from Spanish

Spanish examiners check for: hands at 9-and-3, a mirror check before every manoeuvre, strict roundabout priority (vehicles already on the roundabout have right of way - always), and road-marking-based priority rather than yielding by default. Speed-bump etiquette and lane discipline habits from Colombia will need adjustment.

You keep your Colombian licence

Because there is no exchange, the DGT does not ask for your Colombian licence. Keep it - it is valid for driving in Colombia when you visit, and may be useful in other countries. A Spanish licence does not automatically replace it.

Automatic transmission restriction

If you take the practical exam in an automatic car, your Spanish Category B licence is restricted to automatic vehicles only. Most autoescuelas use manual cars by default - confirm which type you will use before starting lessons.

Start with the theory exam

Theory first - then practical lessons. Our practice tests use the official DGT question bank, available in Spanish and English, in the same 30-question / 27-to-pass format as the real exam.

Frequently asked questions

Can I exchange my Colombian driving licence for a Spanish one?

No. Colombia does not have a bilateral driving-licence exchange agreement with Spain. Colombian residents must take the full DGT theory exam and the practical driving exam to obtain a Spanish licence. The Ibero-American cultural and linguistic ties between Spain and Colombia do not create any exchange right - the agreement, or absence of one, is at the bilateral-treaty level.

How long can I drive in Spain on my Colombian licence?

Six months from the date you register as a Spanish resident (TIE issuance for non-EU nationals). After six months your Colombian licence is no longer valid for driving in Spain - you must have a Spanish licence by then. Note: this is residency-based, not entry-based. Tourists on a short stay (up to 90 days in the Schengen area) can drive on a Colombian licence plus an International Driving Permit for the duration of their visit.

Is the DGT theory exam available in Spanish?

Yes - the standard exam language is Spanish. An English-language version has also been officially available since 2024. Most Colombian applicants sit the exam in Spanish, which is an advantage - you do not need to learn a new language to understand the questions. However, passing still requires study of Spanish road law, which differs in important ways from Colombian traffic regulations.

How much does the whole process cost?

Realistic total: €700-1,500. Breakdown: DGT theory exam fee approximately €94.05 (2026), practical exam fee approximately €94.05, psicotécnico €30-50, autoescuela practical lessons €600-1,200 (typically 10-30 lessons at €40-55 each, including use of their dual-control car for the exam). Practical lessons are by far the biggest cost variable.

How long does the whole process take?

Typical timeline: 2-4 months from start to holding a Spanish licence. Theory exam preparation: 2-4 weeks of study (less for Spanish speakers who focus on the rules rather than the language). Theory exam booking: 2-4 weeks ahead. Practical lessons: 4-8 weeks. Practical exam booking: 2-4 weeks ahead. Physical licence card: 4-8 weeks after passing the practical.

Do I have to take practical lessons even if I have been driving for years?

Effectively yes. The practical exam must be taken in a dual-control vehicle, and the only realistic way to access one is through an autoescuela. Most schools require at least 5-10 lessons before presenting you for the exam, even for experienced drivers, because Spanish examiners look for specific habits - precise mirror-check protocol, hands at 9-and-3, strict roundabout priority - that differ from Colombian driving norms.

Do I have to surrender my Colombian licence?

No. Because there is no exchange, the DGT does not take your Colombian licence. You keep it - useful when you visit Colombia, since a Spanish licence is not automatically valid for resident driving there. Keep both.

Could a Spain-Colombia exchange agreement be introduced in the future?

Possibly - Spain has been expanding its list of bilateral agreements in recent years (the UK agreement was restored in 2023). There is no announced timeline for a Spain-Colombia agreement as of mid-2026. Check the DGT website for updates. In the meantime, the full exam route is the only option.
