Exchanging an Indian driving licence in Spain
India does not have a driving-licence exchange agreement with Spain. Indian residents must pass the DGT theory and practical exams. The theory exam is officially available in English since 2024.
No exchange available. Treaty-level decision. All Indian state-issued licences are treated identically - no exchange, must test.
What to expect

months realistic timeline. Theory first (2-6 weeks of study), then practical.
Things Indian drivers should expect
Lane discipline is enforced
Spanish examiners expect strict lane-keeping, signalling for every lane change, and observance of lane priorities. Lane indiscipline is one of the top reasons experienced drivers fail the practical.
Roundabout priority is opposite to India
In Spain, drivers already on the roundabout have priority over those entering. Lane selection on entry matters: inner lane for exits 270 degrees or further, outer lane for nearer exits. Wrong lane on the exam is an automatic fail.
Horn use is rare and frowned upon
Unlike Indian cities, the horn is reserved for genuine emergencies. Honking at slow traffic or in roundabouts is considered aggressive and is illegal in many urban areas.
Speed limits are enforced by radar
Speed cameras are ubiquitous on Spanish roads. Limits: 120 km/h motorway, 100 km/h dual-carriageway, 90 km/h secondary, 50 km/h urban, 30 km/h residential. Fines start at €100 and points are deducted from your Spanish licence.
Manual transmission is standard
Autoescuela cars are typically manual. If your Indian experience was mostly with automatic, expect more lessons - or accept an automatic-only restriction on your Spanish licence.
Start with the theory exam
Practice tests use the official DGT question bank in English, in the same format as the real exam.
Frequently asked questions
Can I exchange my Indian driving licence in Spain?
No. India does not have a bilateral driving-licence exchange agreement with Spain. Indian residents must pass the full DGT theory exam and practical driving exam to obtain a Spanish licence. This applies to all Indian state-issued licences - Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and the rest.
I have an International Driving Permit (IDP) from India. Does that help?
An IDP issued in India is a recognised translation of your Indian licence and is required for short-term driving in Spain as a non-resident. It does NOT enable exchange and does NOT extend the six-month resident driving window. Once you become a Spanish resident, the IDP is no longer practically useful and you should focus on getting a Spanish licence.
How long can I drive in Spain on my Indian licence?
Six months from your TIE issuance date. After six months, your Indian licence (with or without IDP) is no longer valid for driving in Spain - you need a Spanish one. The clock starts when you become a resident, not when you arrive.
Is the theory exam in English really equivalent to taking it in Spanish?
Yes. The DGT theory exam has been officially available in English since 2024 - same questions as Spanish, just translated. 30 questions, 27 correct to pass, 30 minutes. Computer-based at the DGT centre. Most Indians find Indian English perfectly compatible with the exam English (British-leaning translation).
What about RTO categories like LMV-NT, MCWG, etc.?
Spanish categories are different. Indian LMV-NT (Light Motor Vehicle, Non-Transport) maps roughly to Spanish Category B (car). MCWG (Motorcycle With Gear) maps to Spanish A2/A. Heavy commercial categories are separate exams. You take whichever Spanish exam matches the category you want.
How much does the whole process cost?
€600-€1,500 typical. Autoescuela practical lessons are the bulk (€600-€1,200 for 10-30 lessons). DGT theory exam €92, practical exam €92, psicotécnico €30-€50. No exchange fee since there is no exchange.
How long does it take?
2-4 months realistic. Theory exam first: 2-6 weeks of study, book 2-4 weeks ahead. Practical phase: 4-8 weeks of lessons, 2-4 weeks wait for exam. Physical Spanish licence card arrives 4-8 weeks after passing the practical. Start early - within your first month in Spain ideally.
I drove for 15 years in India. Will I find the Spanish exam easy?
Experienced drivers from countries with very different driving cultures (India, US, UK) consistently report that the Spanish practical exam is harder than expected. Examiners look for very specific Spanish habits: hand position (9-and-3, never one-handed), constant mirror-checking, strict roundabout protocol. Habits ingrained over 15 years can work against you - autoescuela lessons help unlearn the ones that fail Spanish exams.
My spouse is an EU citizen. Does that change anything?
It changes your residency paperwork (you can register as a family member of an EU citizen, faster than the TIE process) but it does NOT change the driving-licence rules. Your Indian licence is treated the same way regardless of your spouse's nationality. You still take the DGT exams.
