Conducir en España con un permiso estadounidense
No existe acuerdo de canje de permisos de conducción entre Estados Unidos y España. Los residentes estadounidenses deben aprobar el examen teórico de la DGT (oficialmente en inglés) y el examen práctico de conducción. Esta guía te explica el calendario realista, el coste y el proceso paso a paso.
No hay canje disponible. A diferencia de los ciudadanos del Reino Unido, de la UE y de América Latina, los residentes estadounidenses no pueden canjear su permiso sin examinarse. La DGT no reconoce ningún permiso estatal estadounidense para el canje. Esto no es negociable en la oficina local de la DGT - se establece a nivel de tratado bilateral.

Register your residency (TIE)
Apply for your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) at the immigration office. This is the date that starts your six-month driving clock.

Start theory study early
The DGT theory bank is around 1,500 questions in active rotation. Most people study 2-6 weeks, 30-60 minutes per day. Practice in test format (30 questions, 27 to pass) so the timing feels familiar.

Get a psicotécnico
Walk into any "centro de reconocimiento de conductores". Vision, reaction-time, and brief medical. Takes 20-30 minutes, costs €30-€50. Required BEFORE you can be presented for the theory exam.

Book and take the theory exam
Through your autoescuela (easiest) or "por libre" via sede.dgt.gob.es. Pick English when scheduling. 30 questions, 27 right to pass. Multiple-choice, computerised.

Practical lessons at an autoescuela
You need a dual-control car for the practical exam, which only schools provide. 5-30 lessons at €40-€55. Schools also handle exam booking and present you to the examiner.

Practical exam
About 25 minutes of city + secondary-road driving with a DGT examiner. Examiner gives instructions in Spanish (driving-relevant Spanish is what you should learn during lessons). About 50-60% pass on the first attempt.

Provisional permit + physical card
Get a temporary paper permit at the exam centre right after passing. Drive on this for around 8 weeks until the plastic Spanish licence card arrives in the post.
Aspectos específicos de Estados Unidos que debes conocer
El tipo de permiso estatal no importa
Tanto si tu permiso estadounidense fue emitido por California, Texas, Nueva York o cualquier otro lugar, el trato en España es idéntico. No existen acuerdos de canje a nivel estatal con España.
Habrá que ajustar los hábitos de conducción
Los examinadores españoles buscan: manos a las 9 y a las 3 (no a las 10 y a las 2), comprobación de los espejos antes de cada maniobra (incluido anunciarlas verbalmente durante el examen en algunas regiones), reglas estrictas de prioridad en las rotondas y respeto a la prioridad basada en las marcas viales en lugar de ceder el paso por defecto.
El cambio automático limita tu permiso
Si haces el examen práctico en un coche automático, tu permiso español de categoría B queda restringido a vehículos automáticos. La mayoría de las autoescuelas usan coches manuales por defecto - confirma cuál vas a usar.
No necesitas entregar tu permiso estadounidense
Como no existe canje, la DGT no te retira tu permiso estadounidense. Lo conservas -algo útil cuando visitas a tu familia en Estados Unidos, ya que un permiso español no es válido para conducir como residente allí.

Can I exchange a US driver license for a Spanish one?
No. The United States does not currently have a bilateral driving-licence exchange agreement with Spain. This applies to all 50 states plus DC - the agreement (or lack of one) is at the federal level, not state level. American residents must take the full DGT theory exam and the practical driving exam to obtain a Spanish licence.
How long can I drive in Spain on my US license?
Six months from the date you register as a Spanish resident (TIE issuance for most non-EU citizens). After six months, your US license is no longer valid for driving in Spain - you must have a Spanish licence by then. Note: this is residency-based, not entry-based. Short-stay tourists can drive on a US license + International Driving Permit for the duration of their visa-free stay.
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
An IDP is a translation of your US license and is required (technically, recommended) for short-term driving in Spain as a non-resident. It does NOT extend the six-month exchange/residency window and does NOT enable any kind of exchange. Once you are a Spanish resident, the IDP becomes irrelevant - you are on the same six-month clock as anyone else.
Why does Spain refuse to exchange US licenses?
Because there is no agreement in place. Spain's exchange rules are reciprocal: Spain exchanges with countries whose driving standards and testing have been formally recognised as equivalent, and which exchange Spanish licences in return. The US has not entered into such an agreement at the federal level. Several US states have agreements with various EU countries individually, but not with Spain.
How much does the whole process cost?
Realistic total: €600-€1,500. Breakdown: DGT theory exam fee around €92, practical exam fee around €92, psicotécnico €30-€50, autoescuela practical lessons €600-€1,200 (typically 10-30 lessons at €40-€55 each, including use of their dual-control car for the exam), study materials. Lessons are by far the biggest cost.
Do I have to take practical lessons even if I have driven for 20 years?
Effectively yes. The practical exam must be taken in a dual-control vehicle, and the only realistic way to access one is through an autoescuela. Most schools will not present you to the exam without confirming you can pass - typically 5-15 lessons minimum even for experienced drivers, because Spanish examiners look for specific Spanish driving habits (hand position, mirror checks, roundabout protocol) that differ from US norms.
How long does the whole process take?
Typical timeline: 2-4 months from start to having a Spanish licence in hand. Theory exam preparation: 2-6 weeks of study. Theory exam itself: book 2-4 weeks ahead. Practical lessons: 4-8 weeks. Practical exam: book 2-4 weeks ahead, can take 2 attempts on average. Physical licence card: arrives 4-8 weeks after passing the practical.
Is the DGT theory exam available in English?
Yes - officially since 2024. You can choose English when booking the exam. The questions are the same as the Spanish version, just translated. We provide the full official question bank in English for practice.
Does the type of US license (commercial, motorcycle, etc.) matter?
Only your regular Class C / non-commercial passenger-car license is relevant for a Spanish Category B exchange. US Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDL) do not transfer - if you want Spanish C (truck) or D (bus) categories you must pass those exams separately. Motorcycle endorsements similarly require the Spanish A1/A2/A motorcycle exams.
